Managing Your Mindset and FPIES

Close up of scissors cutting paper with writing saying I can't do it

Your mindset is half the battle. Many parents are fearful to introduce new foods. I wish I can tell you that you can hold off on introducing solids until your baby outgrows FPIES but that would delay baby's acceptance of different textures and taste.

Think about a progressive mindset versus a paralyzing mindset.

A paralyzing mindset may say:

  • Should I introduce a new food?

  • I’m too scared to introduce a new food.

  • My baby can’t eat anything.

While a progressive mindset says:

  • When will I introduce a new food?

  • What would make me feel more confident?

  • How do I get creative with 3 ingredients?

Your goal is to introduce as variety of foods. You can start off with iron rich foods that is part of your family's meals. High risk or low risk foods in FPIES are not very good at predicting whether or not your baby will react. But if it gives you more confidence, start with the low risk foods that are high iron. Eventually, you will have to introduce the high risk foods as well. It is a matter of when, not if.

To the FPIES caregivers who have only have a handful of safe foods....it is hard work to stay positive. Be creative and don't be afraid to try new things. I have seen many food allergy caregivers do great things with very little. Reach out to others who have great tricks and tips to share.

It is nerve-wrecking this thing called FPIES. Totally normal to be scared shitless. What did it take to make you feel more confident? Share your stories in the comments below.
